Resources for Nursing Home Councils
Who can be an advisor?
Social workers, activity directors, any staff member who would be a good fit in this position. Minnesota law states that every nursing home must offer the services of one of their staff to serve in an advisory capacity to resident and family councils (Minn. State Statute §144.651, Subd. 27). However, the council can also choose that they do not want the presence of a staff member or advisor during their meetings. Advisors can assist councils in many ways including:
Taking meeting minutes for Resident Councils
Notifying Council members when and where meetings will be held
Reserving space, ordering snacks or beverages
Contacting guest speakers
Communicating concerns to administration as requested by the Council

Effective advisors function as coaches to their resident and family councils, inspiring them to establish and act upon their own mission.
